"...I too, was confused by the answer to 1a. and so, out came the "Concise OED" where I found this entry for "Cockney". We all know the London bit so I'll start at: (Austral.)young snapper fish. [ME cokeney cock's egg (cocene gen. pl., ey f. OE ae g), orig. sense prob. small or ill-shaped egg, later 'pampered child and 'townsman']. There you go periwinkle, I hope that helps! Cheers..."
